What is Henna?

Henna (Lawsonia inermis) is a shrub that thrives in hot desert regions and has been used for over 5,000 years. It originated in India, Pakistan, Morocco, Africa, and the Middle East, where it was initially valued for its cooling properties. People would grind its leaves into a paste and apply it to their palms and soles to cool down in the desert heat.

Over time, its ability to stain skin was discovered, transforming henna into a celebrated art form used for decoration and cultural traditions.

The further away from your hands, palm & foot the lighter your stain will be.

How does henna work

Once henna paste is applied to the skin, it takes about 15 minutes to dry, though thick designs or humid conditions may take longer (up to 30-40 minutes). For the best results, a mixture of lemon juice and sugar is applied to the dried paste. The sugar helps the paste stick to your skin, while the lemon juice enhances the stain’s color.

The paste should remain on the skin for 4-10 hours; the longer it stays, the darker the stain will be. After 24 hours, the dye stops developing, but a good stain can still be achieved in 4 hours. When removing the paste, it will crumble off easily—using vegetable oil can help. The stain will start as light orange and darken over 48 hours as it oxidizes. Avoid getting the area wet for at least 8 hours after application to ensure the best results

What is Jagua?

Jagua design refers to temporary body art created using jagua gel, a natural dye extracted from the fruit of the Genipa Americana tree, which is native to South and Central America. Jagua gel is often used as an alternative to henna for creating intricate, tattoo-like designs on the skin.

Unlike henna, which typically stains the skin in reddish-brown tones, jagua leaves a deep blue-black stain that closely resembles the appearance of a real tattoo. Jagua designs are popular for those looking for a temporary tattoo aesthetic, and the stain generally lasts for 1-2 weeks, depending on skin type and aftercare.

Jagua is natural, but it’s important to always test for allergies before use if you have sensitive skin.

BE INFORMED

How does Jagua gel works?

The juice contains natural compounds that react with the proteins in your skin to create a temporary stain.

  • Application: The jagua gel is applied directly to clean, dry skin in your desired design.
  • Drying: The gel dries on the skin within an hour, recommend to keep on for approximately 3-4 hours, forming a temporary layer.
  • Removal: Once dry, the gel is peeled or wash off, leaving a faint mark.
  • Oxidation: Over the next 24-48 hours, the stain darkens to a deep blue-black color as it reacts with the skin and air.

The stain is temporary and lasts 1–2 weeks, depending on factors like skin type, placement, and aftercare. Proper care, such as avoiding scrubbing or excessive washing, helps preserve the design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Magic Formula: Time & Heat – Water = Dark Henna Stain

Henna stains typically last 5-7 days or longer, while jagua stains last 1-2 weeks, depending on skin type, placement, and aftercare. Proper care can help extend the stain's life.

Henna stains the skin in shades of orange to reddish-brown, while jagua leaves a blue-black stain resembling a real tattoo. Both are natural dyes and safe when used correctly.

Make sure the skin is clean, dry, and free of lotions or oils before the session. Exfoliating the area gently beforehand can help the stain adhere better.

Avoid water on your henna design for at least 8 hours after application.  Let the paste stay on for 4-10 hours, then remove it gently with oil. You can apply a sealant (lemon & sugar) after your paste is dry to help to darken the stain. For jagua, let the gel dry completely, and wash off gently after approximately 4 hours with soap and warm water. (avoid scrubbing the area)

The stain color for henna typically starts as a light orange when the paste is first removed. Over the next 24–48 hours, it darkens to a rich reddish-brown shade, depending on factors such as skin type, body area, and aftercare. The darkest stains usually appear on thicker, warmer skin areas like the palms and soles

Yes, I do.  A travel fee of $0.85 per mile (round trip) is applied, calculated from North Valleys. For locations outside Reno/Sparks, a minimum booking of two hours is required.

Yes, natural henna and jagua are generally safe, but a patch test is recommended for sensitive skin or allergies. We use only high-quality, natural products without harmful additives like PPD

The time varies depending on the size and complexity of the design. Small designs may take 10-15 minutes, while intricate bridal or event designs can take several hours.

Absolutely! Whether it’s a bridal session, baby shower, photoshoot, or party, I create custom designs tailored to your vision and occasion.

The stain color for jagua is a deep blue-black, resembling the look of a real tattoo. Initially after wash, the stain may appear faint but develops fully over 24–48 hours as it oxidizes. The final color depends on your skin type and proper aftercare.
